Chasing the Snow

Although some may be happy that the weather is warming up, there are some who dread the onset of summer and the end of the Australian ski season. But for those of you who are addicted to fresh powder – never fear. You can ski all year round; you just have to plan it well.

NEW ZEALAND: JUNE-OCTOBER

When the snow in Thredbo and Perisher starts getting a little thin but it’s not quite cold enough in the Northern Hemisphere, New Zealand is a top spot to carve it up.

Queenstown, Christchurch, Wanaka and Methven, all located on the picturesque South Island, are the most popular destinations and there are a number of cheap flights to New Zealand cities available, particularly towards the end of the season. In the late season, you also have the added bonus of longer, warmer days and there is still typically a lot of snow on the ground. Skiing in t-shirts, anyone?

JAPAN: LATE NOVEMBER – APRIL

The superiority and reliability of snow in Japan has made it a favourite destination among Australian skiers and snowboarders. The length of the ski season, due to the climate and geography of the country, also allows visitors greater flexibility with their holiday.

There are more than 500 ski locations throughout the country, the most popular being Hakuba, Shiga Kogen (the largest resort), Nagano and Niseko in Hokkaido. If you are concerned about culture shock, there is little to worry about. The majority of resorts are bilingual and customer service is second to none.

CANADA: DECEMBER – MAY

The Canadian Rockies are known the world over for their peaks over 11,000 metres high, stunning views and good nightlife. Canada is also one of the most popular places for young Australians to take an overseas working holiday. Each year, more than 7000 Aussies head over to work for a season or two, enjoying the benefits of staff accommodation, free lift passes and a pretty phenomenal experience.

Whistler is Canada’s top ski destination which each year attracts two million visitors from around the globe. Banff, Mont-Tremblant, Kicking Horse and Le Massif are also top picks.

EUROPE: GENERALLY DECEMBER –MARCH

You can’t talk about skiing holidays without mentioning Europe. The sheer amount of options available is enough to warrant a panic-induced nervous breakdown. A fair few European countries possess their own ski fields, (think Spain, Italy, France, Switzerland) which is why Europe often claims to be the birthplace of winter sports holidays.

  1. This pose made me crave for snow vacation which I have yet to experience… the beast or nearer places to experience snowfalls is in Japan, Korea and China… well, Korea is easy to apply visa – no fees until now…
