Half-Day Tour of Places to Visit in Mui Ne, Vietnam

I was scanning through photos during the start of my backpacking adventure when I realized that I haven’t showcased Mui Ne of Vietnam. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to write about each experience fast, but here’s a quick teaser on what you can expect in a half-day tour of this destination.

According to my research (hahaha, yes, I researched!), Mui Ne is a well-known place for windsurfers and kitesurfers. I’ve been recommending this destination to travellers who planned on going to Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). It’s just a 5-hour bus ride from HCMC and you can see so many beautiful places in this town already.

Half-Day Tour of Mui Ne, Vietnam

  • Fairy Stream
  • Fishing Village
  • White Sand Dunes
  • Red Sand Dunes

Instead of hiring a motorbike, we took a 4×4 jeep. I believe we paid 45 USD as rental cost for the whole trip.

Fairy Stream Barefoot Walk

Our first stop was the fairy stream which was a short ride from our guesthouse. I didn’t expect much, but I was pleasantly surprised by what greeted us. A little river that winds its way through bamboo forests, rocks and dunes. The fun part is walking barefoot and admiring the color of the sand.

Towards the end of the stream, a kid took us to see the waterfalls, which wasn’t much of an attraction. I realized that this was a stream after all, so expect the falls to be small.

Quick Stop at the Fishing Village

On the coastal road to the white sand dunes, we made a quick stop to see the fishing village where hundreds of boats lined up and anchored in the bay.

By the way, one thing you might notice when you’re in this coastal area is that it smells like fish. Even in the guesthouse where we stayed, you can literally sense that fishing is a major livelihood in this town.

We also saw different jars and found out that these contain fish sauce known as nuoc mam which are being produced in Mui Ne. I got used to the smell in a few hours.

White Sand Dunes Sandboarding

The White Sand Dunes in Mui Ne was really gorgeous. It’s very wide and might I say, very clean. You can rent ATVs and motorbikes and ride on the vast open area. Or try sandboarding which was no fun at all! haha.

I came across Ron & Monette’s blog post about the White Sand Dunes and I knew I wanted to visit this tourist spot when the opportunity came.

Be careful when you’re on the higher portion! Short sandstorms occur and they hurt badly! Tiny particles of sand, millions of them hitting your bare skin is really painful. Better if you bring a scarf or something for cover. Also, be careful with your cameras as the dust particles might go inside these devices.

Watch the sun set at the Red Sand Dunes

After all the fun activities at the White Sand Dunes, you can then head to the Red Sand Dunes. Although it’s not as grand as the former, we had a great time watching the sun set from this area. We almost didn’t make it because it already turned dark.

I remember frantically running towards the area where other tourists gathered. Since our legs were already tired, we decided to admire it from afar.

So these are the places you can visit in Mui Ne for half a day. You can hire a motorbike driver, I believe, for 10 USD/person; or rent a 4×4 jeep for 45 USD/tour. We preferred the latter because we wanted a more comfortable ride for ourselves.

I know I still have a lot of articles that I haven’t written regarding that 9-month trip. Like all my backlogs, I’m finding time to write about my experiences on each one. Good luck to me. haha.

I’ll try to finish blogging about these tourist places in Mui Ne in the next few weeks. What I can say is that it’s worth your time to visit this side of Vietnam. It’s a very picturesque town that I didn’t worry about my camera settings as much because the place is already beautiful.

    • Hi, yes we took a bus from HCMC to Mui Ne. Plenty of travel agencies offer these bus route services. You can even ask your hotel/hostel for it. For sure, they have some partner hotel/hostel in Mui Ne.
